A suburb of East London, located in the west of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, Barking is a major commercial and retail centre just 9 miles east of Charing Cross. In the 7th Century a nunnery called Barking Abbey was founded here, razed to the ground by Danish invaders and rebuilt in the 10th Century. During the 18th and 19th Centuries Barking developed extensively until it became a municipal borough in the 1930s, and then part of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham in the 1960s.
